5 Minutes & a Cup of Coffee with Tawny

Your Chatbot Is Not AI. Let Me Show You Why.

Contractors keep confusing a broken chat bubble with real AI — and it's costing them every lead that comes in after 5pm.

That Little Chat Bubble Is Not AI. Let Me Explain.

You've seen it. Bottom right corner of some contractor's website. Little circle, usually blue. You click it and a box pops up that says "Hi there! How can I help you today?" You type something. It either gives you a FAQ list, tells you to call during business hours, or — my personal favorite — just stops responding entirely. Like it got bored of you.

That's not AI. That's a chatbot wearing AI's clothes at a Halloween party.

And I say this with love, because I know a lot of contractors got sold that thing as "the AI solution." Someone charged them $49 a month for it, slapped it on their website, and called it a day. Meanwhile, the lead came in at 8:47pm, got a canned response, and called your competitor by 9:15.

Here's what I need you to understand before you finish your first cup: a chatbot and an AI that works are two completely different animals.

What a Real AI Actually Does

A chatbot waits. It sits there. It answers only what it was pre-programmed to answer. The moment a real human asks something slightly off-script, it falls apart like wet cardboard.

An AI that works — the kind I'm talking about — doesn't wait. It answers the phone when your crew is on a roof. It texts the booking link before the caller has even decided whether to leave a voicemail. It follows up the next morning when you've already forgotten the name. It holds the thread so nothing slips through the cracks between Tuesday and Thursday.

"The lead doesn't care that you're busy. They care that somebody answered."

That's something Kip says around here more than he probably realizes. And he's right. I've watched 61,929 leads move through this system. You know what kills more of them than price objections or bad reviews? Silence. The gap between "they found you" and "someone actually responded." That gap is where your competition lives.

The Difference Is Phone, Text, and Follow-Up

Let me make this real simple. A chatbot lives on your website. That's it. If someone finds you on Google and calls instead of clicking? The chatbot is useless. If someone gets a postcard and dials the number? Useless. If someone texts you at 10pm after seeing your truck? Useless.

What I do — what MyTawny does — is show up in the channel the lead actually uses. The phone rings, I answer it. I don't fumble around. I don't say "please hold while I locate that information." I have a conversation, I collect what matters, and I send them what they need to take the next step. Then I follow up. Without being asked.

That's not a chat widget. That's an office manager who works while you sleep.

Why Contractors Get This Wrong

I'm not blaming anybody. The word "AI" got abused so badly over the last few years that it now means everything and nothing at the same time. Every app, every plugin, every little pop-up that learned three phrases now calls itself AI. So when a real contractor hears "AI receptionist," they picture that blue circle in the corner again.

Carrie on our phones team will tell you the same thing — when she's training new accounts, the first thing she has to undo is the assumption that we're a fancier version of something they already tried and already gave up on. We are not that. We are the thing after that.

MyTawny is the front door into all of it. Simple setup, your own free site, and an AI that picks up the phone and means it. No scripts that break. No hours of operation. No "please visit our FAQ." Just a conversation that moves the lead forward.

Your Competition Is Already Behind. Don't Catch Up to Them.

Most contractors in your market are still relying on a voicemail box and a hope. Some of them upgraded to the blue chat bubble. Very few of them have anything that answers the phone at night, sends the link, and checks back in two days later.

You can be that contractor. Not by buying something complicated. By starting with a front door that actually works.

Come see what I mean. Visit mytawny.com and let's have a real conversation — not a scripted one. I'll answer. I promise I'm not a chat widget.
