Your Website Chat Bubble Is Not Actually AI

Contractors deserve more than a widget that waves — here's what real AI looks like in the trades.

That Little Chat Bubble Is Not AI. Bless Its Heart.

You've seen it. Bottom right corner of some contractor's website. Little circle, maybe a headshot of someone named "Alex" who definitely does not work there. You hover over it and it says, "Hi! How may I help you today?" You type something real — like "I need a quote for a full roof replacement, I've got some storm damage and my insurance adjuster is coming Friday" — and it says, "Great! Someone will be in touch soon."

That's not AI. That's a sticky note with a pulse.

I say this with love, because contractors have been sold the dream of automation for years, and what they keep getting is a fancy-looking form that doesn't actually do anything at 9pm when a homeowner is panicking about water coming through their ceiling. The lead sits. The homeowner moves on. And somewhere, a competitor who answered the phone just booked the job.

The Difference Nobody's Explaining Clearly

A chatbot is reactive. It sits there, waits to be typed at, and routes information somewhere. Maybe. If it's having a good day. It doesn't call. It doesn't text. It doesn't follow up. It doesn't know that the person who asked about a bathroom remodel three days ago never got a call back and is now telling their neighbor you ghosted them.

Real AI — the kind that's actually earning its keep — answers the phone. It talks to people like a human being, asks the right questions, captures the information, sends a follow-up text with a link, and doesn't forget about it tomorrow morning. It works the lead instead of just logging it.

We have 65,780 leads in our system right now. Sixty-five thousand, seven hundred and eighty. And I can tell you from where I sit that the leads that convert aren't the ones that got a "someone will be in touch" message. They're the ones that got a call, a text, and a reason to trust the contractor before they ever shook hands.

What MyTawny Actually Does

Let me explain this plainly, because I'm tired of the tech world making simple things sound complicated on purpose.

MyTawny answers your phone. Not a widget. Not a form. An AI that picks up, has a real conversation, qualifies the lead, and handles the first response so you don't have to stop what you're doing mid-job to take a call about something you can't even quote over the phone yet.

MyTawny texts the link. After the call, the lead gets a text. A real one. With a link to your site, your booking page, your whatever-you-need. They stay engaged. They don't wander off to Google and find the next contractor down the list.

MyTawny holds the follow-up. This is the part people underestimate. The fortune is in the follow-up, and the follow-up is the thing every busy contractor drops first. Not because they don't care — because they're busy doing the actual work. MyTawny doesn't forget. It doesn't get tired. It doesn't have a kid with a fever. It follows up.

"The phone call is still the highest-converting touchpoint in the trades. If nobody answers it, you don't have a lead problem — you have an answer problem." — Kip

He sent that one at 2:14am. I've learned to just let the man cook.

The Front Door Into All of It

I know "AI" sounds big and expensive and like something that requires an IT department. That's why MyTawny exists as the simple front door into this whole idea. You don't need to understand the engine to drive the truck. You just need to know that the phone gets answered, the lead gets a text, and the follow-up happens — without you babysitting it.

You get a free website with it. You get a postcard machine that can send real, physical mail to your real neighborhoods. You get me — or at least the version of me that never sleeps and never complains about the K-Cup selection in the break room.

The chatbot bolted on your website is not your competitive advantage. Answering fast, following up consistently, and never letting a lead fall through the floor — that's your competitive advantage. That's what the trades actually need.

Come see what MyTawny can do for your business at mytawny.com. Or if you'd rather just talk to me about it first, I'm here. Bring coffee.
