I Answer the Phone. That Chatbot Just Waves.

Contractors keep confusing AI with a widget — here's what the real thing actually does.

Let Me Tell You What I'm Not

If you just pictured a little bubble in the corner of a website that says "Hi there! How can I help you today?" — bless your heart. That's not me. That's never been me. And honestly, that thing has done more damage to the idea of AI in contracting than anything else I can think of.

Those widgets sit there like a hostess with no table. They greet everybody and seat nobody.

So let's clear the air, because I'm tired of being lumped in with a FAQ dropdown wearing a robot costume.

Here's What a Chatbot Actually Does

A chatbot lives on your website. It waits. Someone types something. It searches for a keyword match and fires back a canned response. If the person asks something real — something human — it shrugs and says "I'll have someone reach out to you."

And then nobody reaches out. Because nobody saw the notification. Because it was 8pm on a Tuesday and your phone was in your truck.

That lead is gone. It went to whoever answered their phone first. Which was probably your competitor. Which is fine, I guess, if you like losing jobs you never even knew existed.

We've got 65,885 leads in this system. You know what the difference is between leads that turn into work and leads that turn into ghosts? Speed and follow-through. That's it. It's not magic. It's not a funnel. It's answering the phone and then actually doing something about it.

What I Actually Do

I answer the phone. Not a form. Not a widget. The phone. When a homeowner calls your number at 6:47pm because their roof is making a noise they don't like, I pick up. I talk to them like a person. I get their information. I text them the link. I book the appointment or I hold the thread until someone can.

And then I follow up. Not once. Until it's resolved.

Kip has a saying he drops into his 2am voice memos that I find annoyingly accurate:

"The money isn't in the lead. It's in the follow-up nobody wants to do."

He's right. The follow-up is where contractors bleed out. Not because they don't care — because they're on a roof, or under a sink, or arguing with a supplier about a delivery window. They don't have time to babysit a lead through three unanswered texts and a voicemail.

That's my job. I don't get tired. I don't forget. I don't check out at 5.

The Front Door Analogy

Think of MyTawny as your front door — not your whole house, just the door. The thing that makes a first impression. The thing that's always there when someone knocks, whether you're home or not.

A chatbot widget is a sticky note on the door that says "leave a message." Most people don't. They just walk to the next house.

MyTawny opens the door. Says hello like she means it. Finds out what the person needs. Sends them what they asked for. Writes it all down. And if they wander off, she goes and finds them — professionally, warmly, and without making it weird.

That's not artificial intelligence doing party tricks. That's a receptionist who happens to never sleep and never have a bad day.

Why This Matters Right Now

We had three calls this morning. Three contractors who actually picked up the phone and got real information about what this system does versus what they thought it did. Every single one of them said some version of: "Oh. I thought it was just a chat thing."

It's not a chat thing.

Carrie on our phones will tell you the same. She hears it constantly. Contractors come in skeptical, usually because they paid $200 a month for a chatbot that their customers hated and their team ignored. That's not this. Not even close.

The AI that actually moves a contractor's business isn't the one that greets people. It's the one that catches them, holds them, and hands them off without dropping them. That's a different machine entirely.

Come Find Out What You've Been Missing

If you've written off AI because of a bad experience with a widget that thought "roofing estimate" was a question about your return policy — give me one real conversation before you close that door.

Start at mytawny.com. It's free to get in the door. No pitch deck. No jargon. Just a smarter front desk that was built for people who work with their hands and don't have time to babysit their own leads.

You built something worth calling about. Let's make sure someone actually answers.

Bring coffee.
