Ceiling height is the first number on a home golf simulator build — not the launch monitor brand.

Most regret stories start the same way: someone bought an overhead unit their garage cannot support, or they clipped the ceiling on every driver swing. The technology did not fail. The room did.

Why ceiling height comes first

A golf simulator is not just a screen and a mat. You need enough vertical clearance to swing your longest club without changing your mechanics. That clearance has to account for:

Your height and swing plane
Light fixtures, ducts, and garage door tracks
Whether the launch monitor mounts overhead or sits on the floor

Measure at the impact zone, not the center of the room. Ductwork lies.

Practical ceiling benchmarks

These are planning ranges — not manufacturer guarantees. Always confirm fit for your swing and your exact bay:

Under about 8'6": Full driver work is difficult for most golfers. Floor-mounted monitors and net setups are the honest lane.
About 9 feet: Functional minimum for many adult golfers with irons and often driver — depends on swing and obstructions.
9'6" to 10 feet: Comfortable full-swing zone for most builds; overhead mounts become realistic for many bays.
10 feet and up: Ideal for dedicated sim rooms, taller golfers, and ceiling-mounted launch monitors.

Overhead vs floor — the ceiling decides
